Body Mass Index (BMI) is a ratio of weight (mass) to height, and is a useful simple indicator on a statistical (population-wide) basis of "fatness" or "thinness". It does NOT constitute an individual diagnosis of whether a person is overweight or underweight. Those concerned that they may suffer from conditions such as obesity or anorexia should not assume that the BMI provides an individual indication, and should consult an expert clinician. BMI is NOT to be used for the classification of children, as it is based on adult heights and weights. The detailed classifications below are provided by the World Health Organisation. Please note that these are statistical classifications only. Adults participating in endurance sports such as long-distance running may have a BMI below the normal range and be perfectly healthy. Adults participating in strength or contact sports such as weight-lifting or rugby may have a BMI classification in the "obese" range while having low body-fat. The BMI does NOT measure body-fat. If you wish to ascertain your body-fat, you should consult an expert clinician, and/or have a skinfold thickness test conducted.
